ESPALIER:
These plants are trained to grow on a flat plane
against a wall, fence, or trellis. Espaliered plants are effective
especially against blank walls where a special interest plant is
desired to relieve the monotony of the wall. Plants that produce many flexible lateral
branches and have attractive flowers, fruit and foliage and bark are
excellent choices for espaliers. There are many different shapes of
espaliers including the "palmette verrier" and "oblique palmette" shapes shown
below. Experiments are taking place with the "cordon" shape, the "u-shape"
and the "belgian fence" shape. These new shapes will be available in the
future.
