LANDSCAPE LIGHTING - Maintaining your system
When systems are installed, they look great! Fixtures are aimed correctly, balanced, fresh and new - that new car type of feel. As time moves on, that newness and freshness wears off. With fixtures being outside, they are exposed to dust, dirt, wind, rain, snow, animals, birds, and kids. Over time they have that outdoor "road dust" accumulating on them day in and day out. From an aesthetic end, it is not a bad thing on the fixture - they are made to be outside. On the light output and performance side, it is time for some maintenance.
About twice a year, we recommend our clients:
Adjust, straighten and re-aim the fixture.
If it is crooked in the ground, loosen the soil around the base and carefully move the fixture back to a plumb position. Pack the soil back into place so the fixture does not settle right back. Adjust any loose nuts, screws, bolts, covers, plates or ground spikes on the fixture. Re-aim the fixture for the desired impact.
You may need to cut back foliage of plants that have grown into and are impacting illumination of the light.
Remove debris and clean the lens.
First start by removing leaves, grass, twigs or other debris from inside and around the fixture. Both line voltage and low voltage fixtures can get hot and dry debris can be a fire hazard. Clean the lenses - you will be shocked at how dirty they can get over time.
To reduce future dirt build up on the lens, apply some "Rain-X" to help shed future rain, dust and dirt.
Check and clean the transformer (transformers are only used for low voltage and LED applications).
Make sure all connections coming into the transformer are secure and tight. There should be no loose strands of wire which could cause electricity to arc. Remove any debris, insect or rodent material out of the box. Finally adjust the clock/timer as needed.
Replace all burned out bulbs.
This is important to do on a timely basis for low voltage systems. Do not wait to do it twice a year - take care of them as needed.
By performing these steps your system will be refreshed and operating again as you wanted when it was installed. If you donāt feel comfortable performing these tasks or have the time, simply contact your Liedās representative to schedule this service to be performed for you.
