Properly sited on your property, trees can increase the value of your real estate, decrease your utility bills and most importantly make your house a home.  If your property needs LARGE trees, Lied’s can help you achieve that dream thru a special process called “winterplanting”.

Winterplants are large size trees and evergreens that are planted at your property during the months of January thru March.

  • Why do we plant during the winter?

We use the freezing temperatures to aid us in our winterplanting process.  Large trees have very large root systems.  When we put a ball of earth on a very large root system, the frozen temperatures help prevent the root ball from fracturing.  Every time the root ball cracks or is massaged, the plant’s root system could be damaged.  A frozen root ball insures that the root system remains in good health.

  • How can we plant when the ground is frozen?

Before the ground has frozen, we put layers of hay around the tree that you’ve selected from our nursery.  We also put hay down at the planting site on your property.   The hay prevents the ground from freezing.   When we’re ready to harvest the tree or plant it at your home, we simply remove the hay and go about doing our work in the unfrozen ground.
  • How big of a tree can we winterplant?

We use this special process for trees that have trunks over 4 inches in diameter and for evergreens taller than 10 feet in height.  We can winterplant extremely large specimens as you can see from the pictures in this article.  Imagine a 20 foot evergreen or 12 inch diameter shade tree transforming your yard this winter!

  • Is equipment needed to install these big plants?

We use backhoes, trucks and occasionally cranes to lift and maneuver these huge plants.  We also use equipment to dig the holes into which these trees are planted.  Your property must have good equipment accessibility in order for us to install a winterplant tree.

  • Do we use tree spade equipment to install our winterplants?

No, tree spade equipment doesn’t allow us to treat each tree as a unique specimen.  In our winterplant process, we customize the root ball to match the actual root system of each plant.  Some plants grow a root system wide and shallow, others have roots that are narrow and deep.  Our root balls are different for each plant.  In contrast, tree spade equipment treats each plant the same… often cutting off valuable portions of a tree’s root system.

  • Are our winterplants guaranteed to succeed?

Yes, our winterplants carry a full one year warrantee just like all of our other plants.  Experience and Mother Nature have taught us the most successful methods of moving these incredibly large specimens.
